i love the Lovecratian theme of many games both roleplaying (CoC, Delta Green and Achtung! Cthulhu) and board games (Eldritch Horror etc).

Until now i had not found a skirmish game that allowed me to use minis and scenery to play solo battles. This system is ideal for anyone who loves painting up their investigators and has lots of monsters ready to go

As well as a very fun and streamlined skimish system each scenario is accompanied by a choose your own adventure mutiple choice narrative! They give real flavour to an already top notch game.

[NB] I'va played the game some months ago, playing through all the scenarios of the basic rulebook, so I'll be going by memory on this review but I hope my memory is not that rusty.

The game is really simple, user friendly and has a good theme, unfortunately while the product looks really polished on the combat it is very incomplete on the campaigns. My observations are: 1) Scenario 3 of the rulebook is missing the Points of Interests table on Scene 1. 2) Scenario choices and rolls are mostly inconsequencial: no boons or banes are obtained whatsoever (equipment? combat advantages? story twists?) making the cases very dull to navigate. 3) There are some monsters and entities presented but no way to use them if playing solo unless they are inserted into a custom scenario. A random skirmish scenario generator or an optional PvP mode (investigators vs creatures) would have made it more useful. 4) Rolls on the sanity table while freely exploring a scene can be safely ignored as they won't produce any effect beside have the character temporarily run away. In general these rolls could have been more impactful (maybe some madness cards inside the deck?). 5) There is no way to change your squad equipment with story choices, shopping or advancement. Not that i need permission to steal the shotguns from some mooks that used them on me during a scenario, but i would have liked some progression. In my opinion a system of money earned on succesfull investigations and a shopping list on the weapons could have fixed my desire.

Not to hard to learn, with some great stories in it. I love the pick your own adventure in combination with small skirmishes and skill tests, it just works great.

One small down side is that you'll need a lot of different scenery pieces, but that's also a plus because you get to visit loads of different locations

great game! easy to play yet full of flavour. i love it solo but have also played cooperative with some mates new to tabletop miniatures games.

What an easy to learn yet beautiful ruleset! Strong narrative oriented scenarios that reminds my somewhat mansions of madness and the choose your own adventure books. David captured very well the deep ambience of HP Lovecraft. The mechanics are easy to learn but they are very solid and the game itself invites you to expand the game with new rules and to adapt it to differents periods.

Very nice ruleset.very clear and well done ,with examples and so on. I'm waiting soon for an expansion with new scenarios and monsters!

Excellent wargame! Waiting for more campaign and scenarios!

I am glad I found Fear of the Dark. I was looking for a game to play alone and it called my attention. “Solo horror skirmish wargame set in the worlds of Lovecraft” sounds good..., but what I found more interesting was the mixure between war and narrative games to be played alone... Easy rules and nice scenarios. I recommend it.

Constantly referencing charts and flowcharts makes this game too slow, boring and predicable. In my opinion, flowcharts do not facilitate a fast paced or interesting game so I recommend getting rid of those. The whole pdf feels like more effort was put into taking good photos rather than designing an enjoyable game. I also recommend finding a good proof reader and editor. As it stands this was a very disappointing purchase.
